Shop like the Thrifty Locals

If you’re looking for a cultural experience and good value, don’t go to the most westernized establishments for your shopping abroad. While these places may offer convenience and the feeling of familiarity (“this is just like home”), the prices tend to be higher, sometimes substantially, than other local stores.

Many cities have “discount districts” – streets where the stores offer goods at a lower price range. You won’t find Gucci outlets here. Usually, you’ll see an abundance of dollar-type stores and merchants hawking all sorts of goods from clothing to kitchen ware. If you see lots of locals, you’re usually in the right spot.

Probably the best value in terms of price and cultural experience is a local market. You’ll find locally grown produce, meats, and other food – of course, you’ll want to make sure that it’s in a safe area and that it’s OK to consume local produce. These usually aren’t places where you can return goods you’re not satisfied with. If you have doubts, walk away!
