There's a restaurant here in Toronto called Bistro Grande that is really great. Not because the food is unbelievable or because it's inexpensive. It's kosher and has great service. A rarity. What really makes this place great, though is going there with special people, having fun conversations, and celebrating milestones.
Spending $12 on a plate of pasta that cost $2 to make would seem ridiculous if all your were thinking about was price. But, if you're looking into value, you'll look at all the peripheral things you gain from the experience of dining at the restaurant. It's an incredible smile of the person eating with you, the clean, artsy decor, and the thoughtful waiting staff. Compared with other restaurants, it's not overpriced.
Thinking only about cost can actually devalue something. If you go out thinking that you'll only purchase the cheapest thing and are worried about the bill the whole time, you'll taint the experience with guilt, worry, and frustration. You don't have to purchase the most expensive bottle, but you don't have to bring the penny bag either. Get the richest experience out of everything you purchase, and your purchases will surely be of a much higher value.
