Alvin and Heidi Toffler in Revolutionary Wealth described "prosuming" as a combination of producing and consuming things for oneself. Prosuming is the hidden labor output of society - it's like dark matter that keeps the universe together. Without prosuming, you'd need to pay for a cook to make your meals, a butler to feed you, and a nanny to change your diapers. How much would it cost for you to hire these? Yet, no one is paying you for you to do these things for yourself.
Today, I replaced the suspended ceiling in my bathroom. My ugly tomato contractor would have likely charged $200 to do this. Before taxes, I would have had to make $330 to pay for this. Now, not only to I get to enjoy a cleaner looking bathroom, but I've also added that labor and value to my property.
Every day you do lots of prosuming. Take an inventory of what you did today around the house, with your family, or for a neighbour. Which things both brought you value and increased your quality of life? These are double value points! Focus on them and you will both accrue wealth more quickly and be happier.
