Homogenized Cash

There's a feeling you get when you check your bank account and see that a paycheck has just been deposited. It's a good feeling - like your very existence has been justified by a credit memo. It's not just a good feeling, it's intoxicating. And by intoxicating, I mean it impairs our judgment. When there's a big piece of the pie left, we want to take a big bite out of it to truly feel satisfied. So too that on payday we feel it's time to 'have a round on us,' our splurge on those cute heels we saw at the mall.

In an ideal world, there would be no payday. Money would be deposited as soon as we earned it and withdrawn as soon as we consumed something. Maybe that day will come soon and our spending habits will be less erratic and less prone to waste.

Until then, we should implement our own homogenizers as much as possible: automatic withdrawals of savings, insurance, utilities, etc. set on the same day we get paid. This will act like our insulin in stabilizing a sweet cash shock. Bon appetit!
